Understanding And Interpreting a Brief

Understanding and Interpreting A Brief

There are a multiple number of briefs which require a certain amount of skills and dedication to complete to a good standard.Working to a brief can be for a companies website or for a companies textbook or magazine. There are different types of briefs and all of them have their own advantages along with disadvantages.

Contractual Brief: A contractual brief is when a client hires a media company to do specific work within the brief to specific guidelines and to be done at a certain deadline. The media company must follow the guidelines of the brief. If the company fails to follow the brief they could face legal action, therefore it is important for the company to follow the brief and to work according to the clients requests.A contractual brief has its advantages and disadvantages.A contractual brief will allow the company to work according the the clients requests making the project very specific and detailed going into specifics that will not be negotiated. An example of this would a film project with a company being given a brief to follow by a client. The company will have to make their work private and to work specifically according to the clients brief and this will have to be done to set deadline without fail.An example of a film where this could happen is the film "Everest" where the mountain will have to be made by a company but will have to be made specifically and according to the brief given by the client without any added things unapproved by the client and with it to be made at a high standard in a certain amount of time. This will also have to be done with information such as programs used to create the sculpture or information about the sculpture being protected and being private and out of the reach of people not involved in the companies project.

However a disadvantage of this type of brief is that the company working on the project may have different views on the brief given by the client and may end up working according to the standard they feel necessary which may result in the company not finishing the project given to them by the client on time, resulting in the company possibly being faced with legal action and with the company being given a bad reputation for failing to meet deadlines. An example of this could be if working on a film such as "Harry Potter" there are many things that need extra attention and detailed work on,however the company may not agree with the clients brief and may do things according to what they believe is a reasonable standard and therefore their project may not meet the deadline that is given to them by the client or the project will not be at the standard that the brief requires and therefore will cause a negative response from the client. This means that in order for contractual briefs to be successful for companies, they must know whether they are capable of completing the clients brief to a good standard and sufficiently to a certain deadline without fail.

Cooperative Brief: A cooperative brief is given when two companies who are competing on a project disagree between themselves and would like the client to clear it up.Therefore during negotiations the companies can discuss the issues that they are concerned with and can get those issues changed so that the project suits each party. This could be from the appearance of the project or to changed the content of the project, and this can be done along with keeping to the guidelines of the brief given to each company by the client. An example of where a cooperative brief may possibly be needed is where in a superhero film such as "Avengers",companies disagree on the way certain hero's appearances are and would like to discuss things they do not like and if the client approves of this they can get this changed so its suits each company that is involved whilst still keeping to the guidelines of the brief, making the work on the project better for each company whilst making the clients brief still achieved.Possibly things such as the characters costumes or lives may not be appealing to each company and they may request to the client to negotiate a way around that along with making any other companies involved happy with the negotiations. If the client grants the request of each company,a change of the project can be done whilst still following the guidelines of the brief, making the end goal reasonably the same as when the brief was initially given to them, making the project still successful.

This is good because that means that each company can open up about new ideas which may improve the initial idea given by the client without stepping out of the guidelines. This means that ideas can be given from multiple perspectives and that many suggestions can be made which will benefit the project and each company all together, making for a more successful project as a whole. However a problem with this could be that some company may bring up unnecessary issues which will disrupt the making of the project and may address things that will be outside of the guidelines given by the client and therefore may end up causing the company to fail in meeting their deadline as work will be stalled whilst trying to negotiate with the client and other companies resulting in possible legal action from the client and a bad reputation for the company.

Negotiation Brief: A negotiated brief is where the media company gets given a brief by the client which outlines the product and and how they would like it to be made. This brief however is fairly open to negotiations from the media company towards the client. The brief gives enough information for the product to be made according to how the client has asked it to be made. This can be discussed by the company and client and they can formally reach an agreement on the product which will suit both parties. However this is not always legally binding. There are positives to this type of brief however their are also some negatives to this type of brief.Having a negotiated brief means that the client and company can open up about new ideas making for a better product and for the option to negotiate new ideas.

However a problem with this type of negotiation brief is that the media company may not be happy with the amount of information they have been given by the client and may not be able to make the product to the clients demands. Also because it is not always legally binding it could leading to problems such as breach of contract. Also with a negotiation brief the media company may ask to discuss too many things to do with the product and may end up trying to make a product completely different to the clients request.

Formal Brief: A formal brief is when a media company is given a brief by a client and it is outlined specifically in which the client wants the product to be made. This brief is very open and gives enough information to the media company on how the client would like the product to be made with any issues or information that the media company would like to discuss with the client can be formally agreed on.However this is not always legally binding and their could be possible financial issues or breach of contract. An advantage of this type of brief is that the client is open to any ideas from the company and because of this,if the ideas are good this could help improve the product to a better standard which would be good for both the company and for the client. This also makes work for the media company creative as they can change ideas and improve the product.

However the media company may feel that they have not got a lot of information from the client and therefore will not be able to make the product to the standard that the client requires of them. Also a formal brief is not always legally binding and could cause legal problems such as finance or breach of contract.

Informal Brief: This type of brief is not always documented and it is where a client and company simply discuss requirements for a product. With these discussions the client and company will agree on how the product will be made.An advantage of this type of brief is that their will be more verbal discussions between the client and media company and there will be a greater understanding from the media company when talking about projects and this will mean that the company will know exactly what to do and how to help the client make the product they exactly want. This will make discussions more relaxed and will make the client and company be more friendly to one another with using slang or informal written language. However a negative of informal briefs are that their are no written documents to prove employment and that means the client could easily fail to pay the media company for their work. Also this could mean that certain dead lines are not met as their could be confusion for both parties.

Tender Brief: This is where the client will advertise their brief to a media company and the company will then pitch their own proposal back to the client and there could be multiple proposals to the client from many media companies.Because of all the options the client will be able to select a media company that will be best suited to make the product of their brief. An advantage of this type of brief is that the client will have a wide range of ideas to choose from making for a higher stand of product and for a better decision to be made.A disadvantage of this type of brief is that if companies are rejected by the client they will be set back in business and it is not easy to gain work in this day and age.The company may possibly decline other offers from clients and may still be rejected by the client which means that the company will lose business all together.

Competition Brief: This is where the client can put up a brief that can be accessed by all production companies and all of them can participate. It can sometimes been seen as a free competition,as a client will give each company a brief and which company produces the brief would win an award of prize. An advantage of this type of brief is that the client will only have to pay the award winning company and in some cases will not have to pay them at all. Also because their is a wide range of companies involved it will mean more options and a wider choice too choose from.A disadvantage is that companies that are turned down by the client may become disheartened as they will be missing out on potential work and money.

31.1 Understand the purpose and impact of social action and community media production work

Social Action and Community Media

The purpose of social action and community media is to bring awareness to situations in life that people over look. This can be all around the world and events that take place in different countries can be overlooked and not known by many and social action and community media sometimes tend to cover issues around the world that are not acknowledged. These issues can be from poverty to war or to female discrimination. To address these issues, groups will come together as a community to make a short film covering the issues that they are trying to make people aware of and will talk about the effect it is causing on the victims of it and solutions and ways to overcome those issues and this will usually increase awareness and make more people join and contribute to the community group.

Social action and community media can be local and can address issues that are problems to your local community such as drugs or gang issues that are increasing.short films or documentaries based on local issues can be very successful in making people aware of things as they will be living amongst these problems and will want to do something about fixing these issues to create and more safe environment for themselves. An example of a social action that brought a global change was "Kony 2012" by Jason Russell. This social action which was led by Jason Russell and globally raised a lot of money and gained a huge amount of recognition and followers because many people felt strongly that they did not like what was happening and therefore wanted to participate in the cause which was to stop Joseph Kony and his LRA group from abuducting children in Africa.

This had a huge impact as it raised awareness globally to many countries who never knew this was happening in Africa. Also many important people such as high elected people in the United States and even the president Barack Obama were involved in the Kony 2012 movement.Jason Russell's Kony 2012 movement was so successful that he managed to convince Barack Obama to deploy United States advisors to aid the Ugandan army as Kony had been hiding in Uganda at the present time. For all of this successful a very powerful documentary was needed and Jason Russell provided a very engaging documentary which captured over 100 million views.

The documentary was fairly formal and used engaging language to make the audience understand the purpose of the campaign and made the audience want to join and help the cause. He used emotive language and also included his personal friend Jacob who had experienced problems and had been abducted by the LRA who was shown speaking about his time under the LRA and how his brother was killed.Afterwards it shows Jacob in tears as he reveals that the LRA had abducted and killed his brother. With language and imagery such as this,it strikes the audiences emotions and makes them want to do something about the situation in Uganda. It brings the audience a sense of urgency and this made the documentary very effective. Also Jason Russell used words such as "We","Us" and "You" to make the audience feel included and to tell the audience that their help will benefit everyone and that everyone who joins in will be important to the cause this persuaded many people and brought awareness as it let people know the impact that their help would bring. The campaign had such an effect that the percentage of civilians being killed by the LRA fell by 67% from 2011 to 2012.

The way the camera is used in the documentary is very effective and is used in may ways to convince the audience that joining the community and Kony 2012 movement would be beneficial to everyone. It showed long range shots of people of all ages doing this to help spread the word about Joseph Kony and raise awareness of the invisible children. At some points in the documentary the camera pans across the screen showing large groups of people holding posters about Kony and this done a number of times also showing the names of the cities that are all following this movement. These cities are all across the world and this is done to enlighten the viewer and let them know that the whole world is coming together for this movement, and the purpose of showing all these places is so that the audience knows that they can be included and will be able to take action.

The camera also zooms in when talking about important things, such as when Jason Russell is reading a letter from Barack Obama it zooms in on the letter, focusing on important information and key words. This is done so that the audience cant look past it and knows exactly what is happening and to let the audience know how great of a contribution they can make as the letter from Barack Obama says that the US have deployed advisors in Uganda to track down Kony. Also with this information the viewer realises that the movement is progressing well and that it is going forward and that everyone plays a part. The camera also has a strong impact on the audiences emotions when the documentary talks about the "invisible children" and how they are suffering under the LRA.The camera first talks about Jason Russell's friend Jacob who was abducted by the LRA and managed to escape. The camera zooms in on Jacob as he talks about witnessing his brother being killed and it shows the sadness he has as it closes up on him in tears and this will impact the viewer as it will sadden them and want them to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

This is done to make the audience want a civil community where nobody is at threat and everyone is safe. The reason this documentary is done is to encourage people to have a voice and to make their voice heard across the world to gain more awareness and attention to the topic they are trying to get across their audience. Another purpose of this is to get the idea of human rights and social justice across and put into effect across the world and that the children in Uganda under the LRA led by Kony are being deprived of that.

This idea creates a strong impact socially as a huge percentage of people are involved in human rights acts and justice acts to make the living standard for everyone fair and humane so that people do not feel oppressed and are living comfortably. A documentary like this would be a reason for human rights activists to make their voices heard and to bring awareness globally that people around the world still live under oppression and discomfort and that it should come to an end as it is not morally correct. Community media productions are done to help show people that these global injustices and inequalities need to be balanced and be done correctly and that if these global issues go unheard of, they will continue for much longer and that means many people in the areas of these issues will continue to suffer. Community productions such as Kony 2012 update people of things that are going on around the world that may not be mentioned on the news and that people are blocked off from seeing, meaning that social action needs to take place but an audience must acknowledge the issues they face and help put a stop to it.

Also if the founders of movements such as Kony 2012 have a large group, that can bring confidence and belief that what they are trying to achieve will succeed as they have a large following meaning that there voices will be heard which will show a sign of people coming together and being united for an important cause and a sense of solidarity within the organization, showing that by just putting out a documentary of by using another way of getting your issue across to an audience that is unaware of it, can create a huge movement and gain a lot of support. With this, social action can take place as their is enough support to possibly win over key figures, or people who are well known enough to help create an action that will take place to stop the issue that is being addressed. The purpose of social action and community media is to make people aware of social or global issues that go unheard of an to put a stop to it by letting people know the problems it causes and how people all  across the world or in the area can play a part in preventing it from happening. This is also done to create unity and a sense of justice and safety. It also shows that governments are not always needed to get a social or global issues across to an audience and that by people simply showing and speaking their mind on issues that are blocked away from most of us, that they can be overcome if people unite together and take action.

The Cruel Cut

The Cruel Cut
The Cruel cut is about female genital mutilation across countries in Africa to young females to keep virginity until marriage. The documentary is very effective as you hear the experiences of females who were given the cruel cut and the effects it had on them even to this day.You see their emotions as they speak about their back stories during their young childhood when they given the painful experience of genital mutilation.

They use techniques such as focusing on the females in the video and using images to explain the physical pain of the genital mutilation and they effects its caused on the women in their lives. With this it makes the audience empathize with the women in the video making the video very effective as it brings awareness to viewers. You see the young females emotions as they explain their horrific experiences and the sadness and pain it has caused them in their lives and it strikes the viewer because many people would want to put at stop to this as it is still going on to this day.

Personally I never knew of female genital mutilation but this documentary has helped me understand how serious it is in some parts of the world and why it should not happen as the pain and blood loss it brings to a lot of young females. From watching the documentary I would definitely want an end of genital mutilation towards females as I now know how much pain they go through because of this. From watching the documentary I was very alerted by the graphic explanations and imagery of how it is done and the effects it has. Also knowing that is only simply done to preserve virginity for marriage  disturbed me but at the same time made me aware that this happens around the world.I think that female genital mutilation should be stopped all around the world.

KONY 2012

KONY 2012

Kony 2012 by Jason Russell was an inspiring movement that warmed many peoples hearts including mine.It was made by Jason Russell to bring awareness to the world about Joseph Kony and his LRA group kidnapping kids and abusing them.Because this had been happening for 26 years people ignored this and the world did not know about what was going on in Africa. The documentary by Jason Russell reached over 100 millions views on youtube and this created a lot of awareness and created a lot of social action by raising funds. It was socially inspiring because he made those children who were deemed to be "invisible" become visible and with that he raised a large amount of money. He also managed to reach out to high elected people in the United States along with other world known celebrities.

I also think it was inspiring how an ordinary man made his voice heard to many people and managed to generate money and eventually managed to get a letter from the United States president Barack Obama saying that United States advisors were deployed in Uganda to help track down Kony, meaning that his goal to begin tracking down Kony was brought into action.

Personally I believe that it was inspirational and that it helped many people recognise issues within the world and I believe that Jason Russell did a good job of raising awareness about Joseph Kony and the LRA in Uganda.

Form:The form of the advert is animation as it shows gameplay from the game Call Of Duty:Black Ops but it is also realistic as it is about the Vietnam war which did happen.

Style:The style is dramatic as it shows the real life issue of the Vietnam war that did happen and it has been incorporated into a game and is shown in this trailer.

Codes and Conventions: Mis-En-Scene and Iconography is shown in the Call Of Duty trailer as it shows the scenery of war in Vietnam and other locations and people who are part of the US army with props in the game like planes and guns which is of course seen in war all the time. Also with the stereotype of guns it gave a clear indication of war.

Use of Camera:The camera has quick pace cuts showing the intensity of the game which explosions and guns being fired along with people jumping off high buildings. The camera also shows close ups of people and pans of the rest of the warfare along with a few 1st person views.

Editing:The pace of the cuts didn't match a beat and but were done quickly.

Sound and Music:The music is actually quite smooth and soft which is a ironic for a war game and also it has the sounds of explosions and firing guns drowned out in it.

Techniques used: The technique is a hidden message and a overt message with in the trailer is saying "The best game of the year" giving the idea that if you buy the game you will not be disappointed as it will be at a high standard. Also it directly tells the audience information.

The shot types were a lot of close ups of the footballers expressions to what was happening in the match when they were playing fifa.Their were fast cuts at the main points of when the advert showed gameplay for example when the players scored or missed a chance.

Editing:The editing would also show the animations that would react along with the football players as if they were alive and had a sense of what was going on.And their was fast cuts between the FIFA gameplay and the football players.

You should print the lyrics out and have a fucking read-along
Ain't a fucking sing-along unless you brought the weed along
Then ju... (Okay, I got it)
Then just drop down and get yo' eagle on
Or we can stare up at the stars and put the Beatles on
All that shit you talkin' bout is not up for discussion
I will pay to make it bigger, I don't pay for no reduction
          If it's comin' from a nigga I don't know, then I don't trust it
If you comin' for my head, then motherfucker get to bustin'
Yes Lord, I don't really say this often
But this long dick nigga ain't for the long talking, I beast

          [Hook]

          [Verse 3: Kendrick Lamar]
          Yeah hoe this the finale
My pep talk turn into a pep rally
Say she's from the hood but she live inside the valley now
Vacate in Atlanta, then she going back to Cali
Got your girl on my line, world on my line
The irony I fuck 'em at the same damn time
She eyeing me like a nigga don't exist
Girl, I know you want this dick
          Girl, I'm Kendrick Lamar
Aka Benz is to me just a car
That mean your friends need to be up to a par
See my standards are pampered by threesomes tomorrow
Kill 'em all dead bodies in the hallway
Don't get involved listen what the crystal ball say
          Halle Berry, hallelujah
Holla back I'll do ya, beast

          [Hook]

          Sitcom Idea Draft

          Proposal and Treatment: Chiraq Hotel

Plot: A group of drill rappers who are also young prodigies from Chicago Illinois who are running a hotel trying to get it to a rating of 5 stars.They are each talented individuals but because of their young and immature natures they tend to cause problems and riots in the hotel. They each have their own personalties but their goals are all the same which is to reach that 5 star level. The manager called Tavares is the oldest out of the young prodigies and controls everything that goes on in the hotel and is the main manager,he is normally relaxed but can be bossy at times but sometimes his young nature can result in chaos in the hotel.

Characters: Tavares: Tavares portrayed by rapper Lil Reese is the most mature out of everyone who works at the hotel and is a leader to the rest of them as he is the manager.Tavares is normally lenient and out going although sometimes a bossy side of him can be shown, despite this due to his young age he can at times be careless.

Sadiki:Sadiki portrayed by rapper SD is the hotels assistant manager. He is just as,maybe even more lenient than Tavares and at times can be childish.Sadiki has a bright personality and is seen at times the most intelligent out of the group.

Derrick: Derrick portrayed by rapper Fredo Santana is the hotels security guard.Derrick usually operates all around the hotel, making sure everything is in order, despite this Derrick at times is careless due to his outgoing personality.Although Derrick is known by the others to have a short temper.

Keith: Keith portrayed by rapper Chief Keef is the hotels room service operator but is very unreliable due to his lazy nature, however at times he does show quality and reliability in his job.Keith is usually hyperactive when on breaks but when working at times he is slow.

Scenario: A scenario of an episode of this would be an episode where their is possibly some celebrities that are staying at the hotel in preparation for a concert and possibly their could be problems with room service or maybe allowing fans to enter the hotel and having problems controlling the situation.

TV Time: The Chiraq Hotel would be on comedy central at around 8 to 11 pm because their would be strong language suitable for teens who are around 15 to adult age.

Their is no other sitcom that I know of that is based in a hotel and therefore it would be original and it would add pleasure and enjoyment because it would give a fresh display of new characters especially for a younger audience.Especially how the sitcom is set in Chicago, the audience will find the sitcom funny especially with the references to drill music as each character is a drill rapper from Chicago.

          Changes made:

Changes I have made to this sitcom is the location,I think that setting it in America would highly increase the range of audience. Also because they are portrayed by drill rappers,it will be noticed by a wide range of people.

Opening Music: Chief Keef "I Dont Like"

          Conclusion:
I think my report is important because it gives the reader something to think about as the sitcom idea is a fresh one with a characters of different personalities and it helps the reader understand the direction the sitcom would go in and what kind of audience it would attract.
